Replace every 12 months
Advance canister filter pump impellers work extremely hard and the 401i Impeller is no exception, spinning thousands of times per hour in your Advance filter. For this reason we recommmend that you replace your 401i Impeller set every 12 months. Doing so will also help to preserve the working life of the motor unit in your Advance canister filter.
Keep a spare pump impeller
It's both smart and inexpensive to keep a spare 401i Impeller set and this will help to head off unforeseen emergencies should your original 401i Impeller fail unexpectedly. Pump impellers are the only moving, serviceable part in your canister filter pump and work extremely hard, spinning thousands of times an hour, so a little wear is often inevitable. Keeping a spare will avoid unecessary downtime of your 401i Impeller filter and help to prevent emergency situations.
Filter Pump Maintenance
Once a fortnight, (or sooner if you notice reduced waterflow) remove the impeller cover and check that the 401i Impeller isn't blocked with aquarium waste and that it can spin freely. Pipework adn fitler taps should be checked once a month to ensure that there are no blockages restricting waterflow and it's also good policy to check the condition of the filter media pads on a regular basis as these can sometimes become clogged with use. Rinse both Blue and Black sponges in a little aquarium water and replace Polymer Wool Pads as necessary, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.
Replacing the 401i Impeller
Aqua One's Advance canister filters are reasonably easy to service and maintain and changing the 401i Impeller impeller isn't a difficult process. First of all disconnect the power supply, then turn the filter taps off. Unclip the four clamps that hold the head in place and seperate the body head from the body. The impeller is located underneath the impeller cover on the underside of the filter head. The 401i Impeller is magnetic and should be reasonably easy to remove. Install the 401i Impeller and re-check that the impeller chamber is clear of debris and aquarium waste. Replace the impeller cover and simply reverse the process to get your Advance canister filter up and running again.
